Visiting Programme Application

APPLY NOW (Click here)

Students who do not want to follow a full degree study programme can consider applying for admission as visiting students to attend courses for one semester or one year of study in a degree, diploma or other curriculum, or to undertake postgraduate research studies or such other studies as may be prescribed by the head of the relevant department. Prospective students who are looking for a place to study abroad but are currently at a university that does not have a formal exchange agreement with HKU can still apply to HKU as visiting students. We very much welcome applications from outside Hong Kong.

To qualify for admission as a visiting student, an applicant should have reached the educational standards in the English language and the subjects of his or her choice considered adequate by the head of the relevant department. The University is unlikely to have enough places for everyone applying for admission as visiting students, and selects those most likely to benefit from studies at the University.

Courses Offered

For general information of the courses on offer, please refer to the Degree Regulations and Course Descriptions. The relevant faculty will be able to indicate whether a particular course is available during a specific semester. Visiting students can be admitted to read for the Diploma/Certificate course in Chinese Language offered by the School of Chinese in the Faculty of Arts if they do not intend to attend these courses for the full duration.

Application Timeline

Before making the application, please read the Notes for Visiting Students.

The closing dates for applications for admission to follow courses of study in a Bachelor's, taught Master's or other coursework curriculum as a visiting student are normally:

  • For admission in the first semester, in September: May 31 of the same year
  • For admission in the second semester, in January: September 30 of the preceding year
  • For the Faculty of Law, early application is strongly advised – before March 31 for first-semester admission and before August 1 for second-semester admission – as places on law courses are limited

The closing date for applications to undertake postgraduate research studies or such other duties as might be prescribed by the head of the relevant department is three months before the intended date of registration.
