About the Programme

The University, in collaboration with National Health Commission, will organize this poverty alleviation programme scheduled for July 21 - 31, 2019.

Students will first spend 4 days in Beijing to understand Mainland medical and healthcare system and attend various clinic attachment sessions in PUMCH. PUMCH is widely known to be the number one hospital in Beijing. Students will then travel to Laiyuan County with other local medical students and will spend 7 days together to provide health promotion education to elderly residents, patients and left-behind children in the impoverished areas, with a view to enhance their awareness of the importance of public health and the quality of life. Students will also be mixed to form different teams to decide on their own study subjects, design the appropriate questionnaires and have interviews with doctors, patients, poor households and etc. to understand better the local medical and health conditions and finally deliver an improvement proposal as a project academic output.

At its heart, medicine is a service profession, and the proposed poverty alleviation programme will contribute tremendously to instilling the essential qualities of altruism, service and humility in students. Service/ humanitarian work is an integral option within the Faculty of Medicine for students during their course of learning and will have the most lasting impact on their personal and professional development, and hopefully on the people they will encounter.
