Here’s a post for all you book lovers out there!

E-readers are getting more and more popular nowadays, but I still think that it can’t beat the good old-fashioned book. I’ve tried e-readers. Yes, they can store hundreds of titles, ebooks are cheaper and they’re more environmentally friendly and everything but you can’t thumb the pages, you can’t doodle your own notes and it lacks the distinctive smell of books. Also, I personally like to watch how as I read through a novel the pages starts to gather from the back cover to the front cover, there’s something thrilling about passing the half way mark.

Yet, books are getting more and more expensive nowadays and it can become quite a burden buying all the titles you want to read. So how about trying second hand bookstores? There aren’t that many in Hong Kong, but recently I came across one located not far from HKU called Book Attic.

Book Attic is on 2 Elgin Street in Central, and true to its name it’s located inside a cockloft. The store is a quaint little space that packs titles of every kind — fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, asian literature, science fiction, photography, culinary… The price is quite reasonable for second hand books in good condition, rarely do titles go up to $100 (except for more professional books), the novels that I browsed were mostly $30 to $40. Customers can also browse their catalogue online before visiting the store. If your desired title is missing you can also add it to their wish list online and the Attic will try to stock it.

I had a chance to talk to the store’s owner, Miss Jennifer Li. She was very friendly and clearly a book lover. For the past few months she went to England to learn how to restore and repair antique books! She manages the Book Attic by herself with occasional help from volunteers who help with cleaning and cataloguing. She’s willing to take donations and volunteers! For donations, if it’s one or two books she’d be happy for you to bring it up to the store, but if it is a larger donation, you’d have to download the donation form and consult before donating. Not all kinds of titles are suitable for the store, the ones that aren’t will either be donated to charity or recycling. As for volunteers, she’d only be willing to take those who are truly passionate and hardworking (cleaning and cataloguing is very time-consuming and may get tedious).

The next time you’re buying a new read, consider visiting the Book Attic for bargain buys!

Happy reading~
