At the beginning of this month, HKU Room to Read hosted a Beers for Books event. What exactly is HKU Room to Read and Beers for Books you say?

HKU Room to Read (HKU R2R) is a newly established University Ambassador initiative at The University of Hong Kong with the Hong Kong Chapter of Room to Read (R2R). R2R is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving literacy and gender equality in education in low-income countries. As a university initiative, HKU R2R works with other volunteer student ambassadors to raise awareness of R2R’s work through events and projects in collaboration with partners on campus. They are passionate students who want to make a difference through creating events and fundraisers to ultimately raise awareness, building a strong and supportive community in HKU and raising funds for R2R.

HKU R2R’s first fundraising event Beer for Books (B4B) was successfully held on 2 Nov. With every drink purchased, $10 was donated directly to one of R2R’s programmes (R2R runs a literacy and girl’s education program). Through B4B, HKU R2R is able to promote R2R programmes as well as build a closer HKU R2R community. The event was held at Culture Club, a comfy bar located in SoHo, with the support from over 30 participants.

On that note, here’s the fact of the day: 780 million people remain illiterate.                                   Help provide them with the reading and writing skills needed to unlock their potential.                 Help unlock the world’s potential.
